Is a Heart Reef Scenic Flight Worth It?

Is a Heart Reef scenic flight worth the money? What an hour in the air shows you that a boat cannot, what reviewers complain about, and when to choose a day on the water.

Updated November 2026

Yes, for most visitors on a clear day. Heart Reef can only be seen as a heart from the air, and an hour in a small plane also shows you Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and the outer reef in one go, which no single boat day does. Fly Australia’s Airlie Beach: Whitsunday Islands & Heart Reef Scenic Flight is US$240 a person (checked November 2026), about US$4 a minute in the air, and of its 350 latest reviews on GetYourGuide, 325 give five stars.

What the hour gives you

Map of the Whitsundays: Whitsunday Airport near Airlie Beach, Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island, Hamilton Island Airport, and Heart Reef inside Hardy Reef, 76 km from Whitsunday Airport in a straight line
Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet on the way out, Heart Reef 76 km from the airfield in a straight line: the ground an hour in the air covers.

Heart Reef sits inside Hardy Reef, 76 km from the airfield in a straight line. Nobody swims at the formation, and from a boat you see reef, not a heart. Tourism Whitsundays says the same: the shape is best seen from above. So if the heart is what you came for, the flight is not one option among several; it is the way to see it.

On the way out, the plane crosses the islands, Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, and the pilot makes several passes at each. A boat day to Whitehaven gives you the beach and the lookout on foot; it does not give you the outer reef or the heart. The flight gives you all of them from above in an hour and a half, door to door, which is why it fits a short stay.

What reviewers like, and what they do not

Most of Fly Australia’s reviews are short and happy, and the same words come up: the pilot’s commentary, the colours, whales in July and August, and “worth it” or “worth the money” in so many words. Some reviewers of the three flights call the price high and still say it was worth paying.

The complaints are few, and they repeat:

  • Cloud. Reviewers of the one-hour flight and of Whitsunday Air Tours' flight who flew on a grey day say the views suffered. One on Fly Australia’s flight described the team waiting and flying round the clouds; one on the one-hour flight from Whitsunday Airport wished the operator had moved the flight instead.
  • Seat side. One passenger sat on the left and felt the right side saw more; another’s mother was put in the emergency-exit seat with a poorer view. Window seats covers how seating works.
  • Timing changes. One reviewer’s departure was moved by 30 minutes the day before, with an onward flight to catch. Leave time between bookings: missed connections caused by a delay are not covered.
  • Motion. Reviewers of the other two flights warn that a small plane moves, and recommend a travel-sickness tablet if you are prone to it.

When it is not worth it

  • When the forecast is grey all week. Book early in your stay, so a weather change leaves time to move the flight; the tropical cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April (Bureau of Meteorology).
  • When you want to be in the water. A flight does not land. The Fly Raft day puts the same kind of flight in front of a boat day with snorkelling and lunch on Whitehaven Beach.
  • When the weight limit rules you out. Fly Australia takes passengers up to 130 kg, and the flight does not suit wheelchair users.
