Heart Reef Scenic Flight Itinerary
What happens on a Heart Reef scenic flight from Airlie Beach, in order: the bus, the airfield, the islands, Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, then Hardy Reef and Heart Reef.
A Heart Reef scenic flight from Airlie Beach takes about an hour and a half from bus stop to bus stop: ten minutes on the bus, a short wait at the airfield, 60 minutes in the air and the bus back. Fly Australia’s Airlie Beach: Whitsunday Islands & Heart Reef Scenic Flight crosses the islands, Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, then Hardy Reef, Hook Reef and Heart Reef, from US$240 a person (checked November 2026).
Start times show when you pick a date. On the dates we read (12 November and 8 December 2026, 12 January 2027), a single adult could book only the 7:30 AM flight; two adults had slots from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM on 12 November and only 7:30 AM on the other two dates. Expect an early start.
The route on the map

The plane flies about 200 km in all. Heart Reef is 76 km from the airfield in a straight line, past the islands, so the flight sees the islands and the beach on the way out to the reef. The plan sets aside about 15 minutes each for the islands, for Hill Inlet and for the reef, and the order below follows the route description.
1. The bus from Airlie Beach (10 minutes)
The courtesy bus collects you at a named stop: Cruise Whitsundays, 384 Shute Harbour Road or Fly Australia Charters. Be at the stop on time: if you miss the bus, getting to the airfield on your own is at your cost, with no refund. If you drive, parking at the airfield is free.
2. The airfield and your seat
The flight leaves from Whitsunday Airport, near Shute Harbour, 8.7 km by road from the centre of Airlie Beach. There is an air-conditioned lounge and luggage storage. Reviewers describe a safety briefing before boarding. The crew places passengers for the weight and balance of the plane, so seats are assigned rather than chosen, but every passenger gets a window. Window seats explains how that works.
3. Over the islands

The plane is a high-wing aircraft with large panoramic windows, so the wing sits above you and the view below is clear. It crosses Long Island and Hayman Island among the Whitsunday Islands, and the pilot talks you through what is below.
4. Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet
Then Whitehaven Beach and the sandbanks of Hill Inlet, where the tide moves white sand through turquoise channels. The pilot makes several passes at each place so you can take photographs. Fly Australia’s flight does not land here; to set foot on the beach, see the boat days.
5. Hardy Reef, Hook Reef and Heart Reef
Out over the open water to the outer Great Barrier Reef: Hardy Reef, Hook Reef and, inside Hardy Reef, Heart Reef. Manta rays, green turtles, dugongs, sharks and, at certain times of year, whales can show in the water below; sightings are not guaranteed. Several reviewers who flew in July and August saw whales.
Heart Reef is seen only from above on this flight. No one swims at the formation; heartreeftour.com covers where people do get in the water on Hardy Reef, and why not at the heart itself.
6. Back to Airlie Beach
The plane returns to the airfield and the bus drops you back at the named stops. Leave time between bookings: a weather delay can move the flight, and missed connections are not covered. If the weather is unsuitable, the staff contact you and move the flight to another time or day, with a full refund if you cannot take one.
For a short stay, book the flight for your first or second day, so a weather change leaves room to move it.
