Heart Reef Scenic Flight from Hamilton Island

Can you fly over Heart Reef from Hamilton Island? The direct seaplane and helicopter options, the ferry to Airlie Beach for the bookable flights, and the times that make it work.

Updated November 2026

No flight on GetYourGuide or Viator takes off from Hamilton Island. The bookable Heart Reef flights leave from the Airlie Beach side of the Whitsundays, and the one-hour flight from Whitsunday Airport neither picks up from nor departs from Hamilton Island. From the island you either book Hamilton Island Air direct, at a higher price and with a minimum group, ask an Airlie Beach operator about a private charter from the island, or cross to Airlie Beach by ferry and fly from there.

Two departure points, the same reef

Hamilton Island Airport is 72 km from Heart Reef in a straight line; Whitsunday Airport, near Airlie Beach, is 76 km. The dashed lines are straight lines, not flight paths.

Heart Reef is almost the same distance from both: 72 km in a straight line from Hamilton Island Airport and 76 km from Whitsunday Airport near Airlie Beach. Tourism Whitsundays lists scenic flights from Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Whitsunday Coast Airport. The difference is not the view but how you book and what you pay.

Flying from the island

Hamilton Island Air sells direct, not through GetYourGuide or Viator, so its flights are not booked here. Its seaplane flight over the reef is A$830 a person, for a minimum of four. Tourism and Events Queensland lists the Heart Island trip, a helicopter flight to a pontoon near Heart Reef, from A$1,400 a person.

Ocean Rafting’s own site lists a private charter scenic flight “from Airlie Beach & Hamilton Island”. The charter is arranged with the operator, not through the group-flight listing, whose pickups are on the Airlie Beach side, and no price is shown.

If you have searched for a “Heart Reef seaplane”, look here: none of the flights from Airlie Beach is a seaplane. Tourism and Events Queensland also names Air Whitsunday, whose seaplane flies over the reef and lands at Whitehaven Beach.

For a small group staying on the island, the convenience may be worth the price. For one or two people, the minimum of four on the seaplane is the first thing to check.

Crossing to Airlie Beach for the flight

Cruise Whitsundays runs the ferry between Hamilton Island Marina and Port of Airlie in Airlie Beach. On the timetable on its site (February 2026, no fares printed):

DirectionFirstDirect sailingsLast
Hamilton Island to Port of Airlie8:50am, arriving 10:00am via Daydream Island5:10pm, arriving 6:00pm5:30pm, arriving 6:35pm
Port of Airlie to Hamilton Island7:15am, arriving 8:20am via Daydream Island8:00am (arriving 8:50am) and 3:05pm (arriving 4:05pm)4:05pm, arriving 5:15pm

So a day trip from the island works only with a late-morning or early-afternoon flight. The first ferry reaches Airlie Beach at 10:00am, and you still need to reach one of the flight’s pickup stops. On the dates we read, Fly Australia had slots from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM for two adults on 12 November 2026, but only the 7:30 AM flight on 8 December 2026 and 12 January 2027; on a 7:30 AM date you would need a night in Airlie Beach first. Check the slots for your date, and ask the operator which pickup stop suits someone coming off the ferry.

Leave room either side: missed connections caused by a delay or a weather change are not covered on Fly Australia’s flight.

If you are staying in Airlie Beach

Then there is nothing to weigh: the flights from the Airlie Beach side cost less, take one or two people, and pick you up in town. Fly Australia's 65-minute flight collects you at named stops in town, and what a Heart Reef flight costs compares it with the other two.
