How the Heart Reef Flights Differ

Where each one takes off, how long you spend on the bus and in the air, what the seats are like, and what the price buys.

Where each flight takes off

Map of the Whitsundays showing Whitsunday Airport at Flametree near Airlie Beach, 76 km from Heart Reef in a straight line, and Hamilton Island Airport, 72 km from Heart Reef in a straight line, with Heart Reef inside Hardy Reef on the outer reef
Whitsunday Airport near Airlie Beach is 76 km from Heart Reef in a straight line; Hamilton Island Airport is 72 km. The flights sold here take off on the Airlie Beach side.

Fly Australia’s flight and the one-hour flight from Whitsunday Airport both use the airfield at Flametree, near Shute Harbour, 8.7 km by road from the centre of Airlie Beach. Fly Australia’s bus takes about 10 minutes from named stops (Cruise Whitsundays, 384 Shute Harbour Road and Fly Australia Charters); the other flight’s bus takes about 15 minutes and collects from 21 named stops, most of them hotels and holiday parks. If you have a car, Fly Australia’s parking at the airfield is free.

Whitsunday Air Tours' 70-minute flight uses Laguna Quays Airport, further south. Its van takes 30 minutes each way from ten pickup points, one of them Whitsunday Coast Airport, or you can meet at the airfield. One reviewer counted about four hours from pickup to drop-off, so leave the afternoon free.

None of the three leaves from Hamilton Island. If you are staying there, see flying to Heart Reef from Hamilton Island.

What an hour in the air covers

The flights cross the islands and head out to the reef. Fly Australia’s route goes over Long Island and Hayman Island, Whitehaven Beach and the sand of Hill Inlet, then Hardy Reef, Hook Reef and Heart Reef, about 200 km in all, and the pilot makes several passes over each place. About 15 minutes each go to the reef, the islands and Hill Inlet. The itinerary goes through the flight in order.

Whitsunday Air Tours' flight covers Conway National Park, Airlie Beach, the islands, Hill Inlet and the Great Barrier Reef. Heart Reef and Whitehaven Beach are among its highlights rather than in its route, and one reviewer wrote that they did not see Heart Reef. If the heart is the reason you are flying, ask that operator before you book.

None of these planes lands. Nobody swims at Heart Reef itself; Tourism Whitsundays notes that the formation is protected and that swimming and snorkelling are not permitted there.

Seats, windows and sides

All three listings promise a window seat to every passenger. What you do not get is a choice of side: on Fly Australia’s flight the crew seats people for the weight and balance of the aircraft, and a party can be split. Several reviewers describe the pilot circling so both sides see each place; one wrote that the right side saw more. Window seats has what reviewers say about the seats, the co-pilot seat and motion sickness.

What the price buys

Fly Australia’s price includes the courtesy bus, the lounge and luggage storage, the 60-minute flight with live commentary, and marine park fees, airport fees and taxes; nothing is listed as extra. For an hour over Heart Reef with nothing more to pay on the day, it is the flight to book.

Check times for the Heart Reef flight

The same flight sells on Viator as 1-Hour Whitsunday Islands and Heart Reef Scenic Flight for US$237 (checked November 2026). What a Heart Reef flight costs sets the three flights, the Viator prices and the direct Hamilton Island prices side by side, and is it worth it? weighs the price against what an hour in the air gives you.

Before you book

  • Weight. Fly Australia and Whitsunday Air Tours do not take passengers over 130 kg; the one-hour flight from Whitsunday Airport sets the limit at 125 kg.
  • Mobility. Fly Australia’s flight does not suit wheelchair users; on the one-hour flight every passenger climbs the aircraft steps unaided.
  • Weather. If Fly Australia’s staff judge the weather unsuitable, they contact you and move the flight to another time or day, with a full refund if you cannot take one. The tropical cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April (Bureau of Meteorology), so fly early in your stay.
  • The bus. Miss Fly Australia’s shuttle and you get yourself to the airfield at your own cost.
